What's the difference between coaching and spiritual direction?
Coaching is a partnering relationship between the coach and client to explore the client's goals. It's focus is on creating future steps in the present reality. Coaching helps the client explore possibilities, set a goal, and consider practical ways forward.
Spiritual direction, also called spiritual accompaniment, is not goal-oriented, but rather all about the present moment. The spiritual director, more a companion than a mentor or adviser, offers sacred listening in a safe space to help the directee become more aware of God's presence and communication. Spiritual direction helps the client articulate their spiritual journey, pay attention to Divine Presence, and consider rhythms that align them with God's desire.
What's the difference between pastoral counseling and spiritual direction?
Spiritual direction is a long term relationship, a safe space to process your spiritual journey without judgement. The focus is to become more aware of the presence of God with you and His invitation to you. The spiritual director, more a companion than a directive mentor, provides sacred listening. Spiritual direction helps the client articulate their spiritual journey, pay attention to Divine Presence, and consider rhythms that align them with God's desire.
Pastoral counseling is a short term offering for those in need of extra spiritual and emotional support. It involves compassionate listening, exploring questions & prayerful moments, counseling includes more feedback and direction from the counselor than in spiritual direction. Counseling moves toward healing, freedom, connection with God, and clarity from God. Pastoral counseling may be a one time session up to two hours or reoccuring sessions for a short period of time.
